Activity Description

In partnership with the Eastern Council for Social Responsibility and Eastern Province Development Authority, the Department of Interior Design initiated this course for exploring possibilities of designing “Dammam City Gates” that reflect the historical and cultural characteristics of the Eastern region, specifically of the city of Dammam. The first part of the course covered the meaning, concept, and spatio-political role of city gates (entrance point) in the urban context. Then, students investigated the history and culture of the region, to develop a symbolic concept for the Gateway project which relates to the collective identity of the city of Dammam. The second part of the course focused on the project design process among students’ groups. In accordance with KSA’s 2030 vision, the design process is oriented to achieve several design criteria, with special emphasis upon symbolism, innovation and creativity.
